Summer Heat is here........
      ...and can be dangerous
Tips to enjoy the Summer safely with your pets.....

  • Only walk dogs in the early morning and cool evening.
  • Take dogs on short walks, no jogging.
  • Bring a bottle of water for your dog to drink from.
  • Leave pets at home in the air conditioning when you are running errands.  Cars get too hot, even with the windows open or cracked.
  • Never allow a pet to ride in the back of a truck, there is no shade and they can suffer traumatic injuries.
  • Talk to your veterinarian about pet safe sun screen - especially dogs with white and pink noses.
  • Cats can get heat stressed too, keep them inside.
  • If its too hot for you to walk on with bare feet, its too hot for them as well. (Trails, Streets, and Sidewalks)

Boating

  • If your pet goes on the boat, do not allow them to drink from the sea/beach water - it causes salt toxicity and possibly seizures
  • Purchase a life vest for each pet and use them.
  • Use caution with fish hooks and tackle gear.  Bait on hooks look like tasty treats to dogs and cats.

Family BBQ's

  • Make sure that your guests know you have pets so they close exterior doors behind them.  Make a sign to hang on the front and patio doors.
  • If you take pets swimming, teach them where the steps to exit the pool are.
  • Clean their ears after swimming to prevent ear infections.  (Malacetic Otic is great for swimmers)
  • Let your guests know your pets eat their pet food, so they are not tempted to give them people food.
  • Make sure your pets are microchipped and wearing their collar and id tags.
  • Chocolate treats are toxic to pets
  • Clean up right after the party, so pets can't drink from half empty glasses (especially alcoholic beverages)
  • If your pets get nervous around new people, find a "happy place" - an inside air conditioned room - with toys, treats, and a radio for noise distraction.

Common Summer Threats

  • Fleas - Use protection monthly
  • Ticks - Use protection monthly
  • Heartworms from mosquito bites, use protection monthly
  • Heat Stress
  • Heat Stroke
  • Hit by Car - Trauma
  • Fish Hooks in mouths and paws (and swallowed)
  • Pancreatitis - from eating meats, bbq and people food
  • Foriegn Body Surgery - eating leftovers, chicken bones
  • Poisonous Plant ingestion - check before you plant
  • Lost pets - All pets should be microchipped
  • Drowning in pools - Attend to pets just like children
  • Alcohol Toxicity - Drinking out of leftover cups from parties.
Please enjoy a safe and happy summer !
What to do if your dog gets overheated ?

  • Get to a shady spot as soon as possible
  • Allow your pet to drink water
  • Call your veterinarian and get your pet there asap !
  • Don't wait.  If it is after hours, go to the ER
  • Don't hesistate or wait - life threatening, irreversible damage can occur to the brain, kidneys and liver.
  • Do NOT ice bath, ice water or stress your pet -
this can cause shock and worsening of this condition.
