Can you help us help Rocky ?
                                                               Posted January 4th, 2010
In November 2009, we received a request to help a little dog that had been found injured.  Dr. Daniels' husband picked him up and brought him to our hospital.  He was a little scared but very cute and friendly.  He had a large open laceration over the entire left side of his chest, and multiple small scars on his back.  It is not clear if he was attacked by another animal, or a victim of abuse.

After a thorough exam, updating of his vaccines and deworming, we drew a blood sample and found out he was heartworm positive.  We also performed a pre-anesthetic screening to be sure he was clear of any internal organ damage.

After pain medications, antibiotics, and wound care - Rocky was stable enough to have his first surgery to close the large wound and remove the devitalized tissue.  It was a success ! Dr. Daniels closed the defect and Rocky recovered over the next three weeks on his medications.  Since recovering from his wounds, Rocky is now also undergoing his heartworm treatment injections.

We have all grown so deeply attached to Rocky and he has become such a special part of our lives.  During the past few months, we have come to realize the special temporary needs that Rocky has:

1)  He must rest and remain minimally active while going through his heartworm treatment - through March 2010

2) He needs additional training - He can get very energetic and jump as high as a table top.  He has already learned sit, and stay.

3) He eats so quickly - who knows what life he had before us and how often he was given food.

4) He gets along with other animals, and will try to play
(but right now he needs to stay calm during his treatment)

5) He likes to chew on rocks (hence the name Rocky) - probably from when he was a stray looking for his next meal, so we are positively diverting that behavior to toys, kongs, and chews.

6) We have crate trained him to go to the bathroom outside.  He had not had an accident in the crate or house for two months.

We would like to find Rocky a foster and/or adoptive family.  It would be ideal for Rocky to be the only pet in the household to prevent too much activity while undergoing his heartworm treatment.  This would also give him some one-on-one training and attention to continue to grow as a family pet.

His wounds are closed and just scars now.  He has finished  his heartworm treatment.

Would Rocky be a good match for your family ?

If so please call us at 813-926-1126.
